Management poem

This class was an interesting way to learn about management
with many different types of assignments
Like dropping eggs from up high
or the survival scenario when your plane drops from the sky
Then there were ideas for jello
or building something made of lego
But they weren't really legos they were Mega Bloks
at least I had fun while waiting out the clock
The things we would do for some extra credit on the test
heres a try: professor Kurpis you're the best
Also here I am standing in front of class
readig this poem like an ass

Blogging

This was the first blog that I ever made and to be honest, I never really liked the idea of blogs, so I didn't really enjoy it. However, I thought it was interesting assignment to do for class. It definitely fits into this class more than others because there is a lot more communication, group work, and the class is more social.

DISC

For the leader/management test, my results came back as a C and high D. I was very surprised because I think the results were accurate. I think the main thing from C that is true with me is that I don't like to make decisions unless I understand all the facts. If I wish I were another type it would have to be D because they are the most likely candidates to be leaders. However I don't think that I can switch types. For the winter survival scenario, I think you would definitely want a D in that group because they will act as a leader and be able to handle difficult situations.

Visions...

One of the main visions for me is to finish school and get a decent well paying job (hopefully one that I would enjoy). I think to achieve this, doing well in school is not quite enough. Job experience is very important and I am going to look for an internship for next semester while I continue school. Another vision that I have is to go travel as much as I possibly can. This was actually something that just came up recently because when I was younger, I never really cared about traveling and going on trips, but now I know better. You can experience so much while traveling and its definitely something I would like to do as much as I can. For spring break recently, I went to LA and Vegas and there are already plans to go back! Something that I really want to do is play in different poker tournaments that are hosted all over the world, but to do this would require a lot of money. The professor's blog assignment said don't put winning the lotto as one of the visions you have because that is something you can't control, but one of my visions is winning a big poker tournament. Even though there is a lot of luck involved, this is something I have control over as opposed to playing the lotto. The odds are much better!

Decision Making

For the class where the class was deciding what to do about the first exam, it got pretty chaotic and I didn't really get into it. So I guess the way I used to handle conflict was avoidance. I chose this method because there were a lot of people in the class that were really outspoken and I agreed with their ideas. If there was something that wasn't mentioned or something I didn't agree with, then I would've said something and my way of dealing with it would've been to compete to win. The end result was good for the class overall. We got most of the things we wanted that were brought up during the class. Props to Teddy who I thought did a great job in facilitating the class. Another thing I would like to add is that I thought this class was interesting because early on, I figured that it was probably part of the lesson plan and was curious to see how it would plan out. A very hard test, leading to this decision making class to allow us to work together and get our grades up from the first test. After the class was over my assumptions were proved correct when the professor announced that it was all part of the lesson plan.

Eggs-tra credit

So I definitely got a lot of catching up to do for the blogging assignment and I'll start here with the egg assignment. My team was surprisingly one of the ones that actually got the extra credit because by some miracle our egg didn't break when we dropped it. My team did go through all of the steps in the planning process and did well up until step 5. That is where we had our problems. We had a hard time implementing the plan we had come up with and ran out of time towards the end to evaluate our results. The results were not something we were happy about, but we dropped the egg anyways. To our team's surprise the egg didn't break and we were all pretty excited about getting the extra points. I guess we got a break!

Mcdonalds order certainly not "Well Dun"

The Mcdonald’s I went to was the one on 3rd ave and St Marks. It was around 11pm so there weren’t that many people inside. I went up to order and I saw only one lady standing around behind the counter. After about 30 seconds of me standing there, she finally walked up to the counter and I was greeted with a “Dis Mcdonalds, whatchu want?” in a heavy Jamaican accent. At that point, I already knew this was going to be quite an experience getting this assignment done. So I ordered a hamburger with 4 pickles on it and small fries, well done with no salt. I think because I made such a weird order, she thought I was messing around so she shot me a dirty look and sarcastically asked me “Ya want meat with that hamburger?” I told her yes, because I want a hamburger with exactly 4 pickles. So she yelled to the back in a different language that I’m assuming is Jamaican. Then the guy in the back looked up front to the counter and she repeated again this time in English, “Hamburger 4 pickles” and she held up 4 fingers. She then left the counter and went to the fryer for the order of fries. After she left some other girl came up to the counter to input the order on the machine. She was much younger and was wearing a different shirt than the other lady. I figured out that she was the person that took orders and the lady was the manager. I told the girl that I needed a receipt that says I ordered a hamburger with 4 pickles, and small fries well done with no salt. While I waited for the food to be ready, the girl was trying to see if the machine can print out the receipt the way I wanted. She finally printed out the receipt and it only said hamburger with 1 pickle and small fries. Then the manager came back with the fries and packed up my order because the hamburger was already done. Then I told them I needed a receipt that says I ordered a hamburger with 4 pickles and small fries well done with no salt. The manager said we can’t do that because the order is already printed out. So I asked if she was the manager and if she could write 4 pickles for the hamburger and no salt well done for the fries and sign it. She shot me another dirty look and took the receipt and a minute later she gave me it back and I saw that she wrote the number 4 over the number 1 on the receipt where it said “1 extra$ pickle”, but that was it. She didn’t write anything about the fries or sign it. So I asked her again if she could put no salt well done for the fries and sign it. She got really annoyed and said “Why ya messin with me? Why ya waste my time?” I figured at this point there was no way I was going to get the receipt done correctly so I had to tell her this was for a school assignment. She didn’t believe me and said “Ya lying, You a liar.” Then I showed her the printed out assignment page and explained why I needed the receipt printed out that way and she told me the receipt can’t print out that way. I told her that I saw some receipts from others who have done the assignment already and their receipt showed you can print out 1 extra pickle 4 times and show fries well done no salt. So she told me that she can print it out that way but she doesn’t because it’s a waste of time. By the way, during this whole time the other girl and the guy in the back were watching this go down and found it hilarious, and I don’t blame them. The manager then said “You getting a F. Tell your professor that I say he crazy. Waste my time.” She finally took my receipt again and after 2 minutes, she gave it back and I saw that she wrote under the small fries “No Salt, Well Dun”, but it was still unsigned. Now I know what you’re thinking. This is too funny to be true, but you can’t make this stuff up. Why would you? It would waste everybody’s time. So at this point, I knew there was no way she was going to sign this and just left.

The whole order took about 10 minutes and there were a total of 3 people involved but most of the time was trying to get the receipt done. Surprisingly the food was done correctly. The guy in the back made the hamburger really fast and it was done correctly. The girl was friendly trying while working the machine to get the receipt to print out the way I wanted to even though it came out wrong. I don’t think she knew how to print out anything but the basic orders. The real problem was with the manager. She was hostile from the start and the whole time thought I was messing with her and trying to waste her time. If I were brought in as a consultant to Mcdonalds to help them improve operation during special orders I would say that their food preparation was fine, but they really need to work on their customer service. They need to learn how to input special orders into the machine and be able to print it out correctly if the customer requests it. Another thing I would recommend is for the manager to treat the customers with more respect regardless of what they order. The last thing I would recommend is for the manager to take some spelling lessons.

Management prob

A lot of my close friends are poker players and we like to take trips to casinos to play live games. This winter break, I spent a lot of time in Atlantic City. But ever since classes started again, I haven't had the chance to go with my friends because I've been extremely busy and our schedules don't match up. So I would have to wait for a break during the school year or until the semester is over to plan a trip to go with them.

About me

Hi, my name is Peter Leung. This is my second semester in Baruch. I graduated from BMCC with my associates in Business administration in spring '08. Ending up in Baruch is kind of weird for me because I went to high school at School of the Future which is 1 block away. Warning: School of the Future is a terrible school! Recently, I had to get my high school transcript and bring it to Baruch to satisfy my foreign language requirements. Their process of retrieving student transcripts is having the security guard take out a piece of scrap paper and having you put down your contact info so they can "get back to you". Needless to say, I never received my transcript and will have to go back again.

Outside of school, I enjoy hanging out with friends, watching tv, and playing poker. Some of my favorite tv shows are Lost, House, The Office, and Walker, Texas Ranger. Yes, Walker, Texas Ranger is just as good of a show, if not better than the other 3 shows I listed. I play poker online, but I enjoy live games better. Over the winter break, I spent a couple of weeks in Atlantic City with my friends to play in the Borgata Winter Open. I also play 1-2 no limit texas holdem. Here is a pic I took on my phone of one of my recent poker sessions.
